Rehearsal dinner napkins for the night before

How many rehearsal dinner napkins do I need?

One to two dinner napkins per guest for the meal, plus two to three cocktail napkins each for the drinks beforehand. For 40 guests that is 40 to 80 dinner napkins and 80 to 120 cocktail napkins.

Which size should I order?

Dinner size, 6.5 x 6.5 inches, for the table, since this is a seated meal with the napkin under the cutlery. Cocktail size, 4.8 x 4.8 inches, for the drinks. Ordering both is the normal split.

What side does the napkin go on?

To the left of the plate, under the forks, in a standard American place setting. If the table is tight, folding it into a rectangle on top of the plate is perfectly correct and gives the printed design more visibility.

Should the rehearsal match the wedding?

Up to you, and both are common. Matching makes the weekend feel like one event; deliberately contrasting makes the rehearsal feel like its own night. If you want a thread without repetition, keep the typeface and change the color.

What wording works?

Both first names with the date is the safe version. The night before, rehearsal dinner with the surname, and a short toast are the ones we set most after that. Longer lines print better on dinner size than on cocktail.

When should I order?

Order the rehearsal and the wedding napkins together, two to three months out. One proof round, one delivery, and you are not making the same decision twice under time pressure.
